Do I Really Need to Wear This Uniform?

The importance of being in uniform, and more specifically, the right uniform, is outlined in this post.

When an organization has employees wear uniforms, there is a sense of commonality and community which develops amongst them. The importance of being in uniform, and more specifically, the right uniform, is outlined below:

It Unites Staff

Uniforms not only make employees feel proud, but they have the power to unite a team and create a sense of community within an organization. They can also have an imposing effect on others and with the presence of a person in uniform, this garb can change the mood of people around.

It’s Clear and Helpful to the Customer and Those in Need

These days wearing uniforms is common in government, public safety, security, hospital staff, the armed forces, etc. Wearing a uniform helps them stand out of the crowd so that they can be recognizable and distinguished.

Being in uniform creates an opportunity for an employee to be available and provide customer service, and most importantly, if there is an emergency or someone needs assistance, a uniform is a direct indication that a person can be of service.

It Portrays The Business Professionally

A delivery person would not appear professional in jeans and a t-shirt. Similarly, a hotel concierge would not be seen as professional if they were wearing a college sweatshirt. Having uniforms helps to brand the company by distinguishing it from the competition. Additionally, consistency in employee appearance can create a positive impression on the customer and contribute to projecting the corporate image.

It Levels the Playing Field for Employees

Having everyone wear the same uniform conveys a sense of equality, as no one can be singled out for issues with their clothing and subsequent financial status.

It Creates a Sense of Camaraderie

Employee “team members” and “employee partners” is a great culture to create and many companies utilize this approach. If a work force wears the same uniform, then they share a feeling of commonness and belonging, which otherwise can be very difficult to achieve.

It’s Safe, and Required

Last but certainly not least, in some professions uniforms are required, almost by law. Moreover, some uniform guidelines are implemented as a safety precaution. For example, having a jumpsuit or shirt that’s fire retardant, breathable, heat wicking, etc. are all opportunities for employees to remain safe and comfortable on the job.

When you see a person in a uniform, you get a sense of who they are and what they do. The members of a sports team wear their uniforms to say “I belong to this team.” Police officers and firefighters wear their uniforms to say “I provide a service to my community.” Even Superman and Batman wear uniforms to say “I’m one of the good guys, and I stand for what’s right.” Wearing a uniform gives employees a sense of identification.
