A Mixed Bag for Security Guard Employment Despite Projections and 9/11 Fear

By Jackie Rosselli

You’ve probably read the report on some government website or seen the figures cited in an article.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of security guards was expected to be robust, growing faster than the average for all occupations through 2012. Concern about crime, vandalism, and terrorism were touted as the driving forces behind the trend. Further, demand for guards was also expected to grow as private security firms increasingly performed duties—such as monitoring crowds at airports and providing security in courts—which were formerly handled by government police officers and marshals.

Product News: Dow, Pella, White Swan, and Tri-Mountain's new on-line ordering system

Dow Fiber Solutions has launched a new fiber called Dow XLA™ HTT, a revolutionary, high temperature tolerance fiber stretch solution that is inherently resistant to the high heat and harsh chemicals used in industrial laundering, tunnel drying and dry cleaning. Dow XLA HTT is the world’s first olefin-based stretch fiber to withstand temperatures up to 220 degrees Celsius without compromising stretch performance. Uniform manufacturers in the workwear and career apparel sectors have begun producing garments with Dow XLA HTT fiber because the fabric withstands temperatures optimal for thermosol dyeing of polycotton and polywools, and maintains dimensional stability and stretch – all while providing lasting stretch performance through boil, UV, chemical and chlorine resistance.

“Forces to be Reckoned” - Part 2

By Joseph Greco
Greco Apparel, Inc.

My article last month was “The Ten Forces that Flattened the World”, from the book, The World is Flat, by Thomas L. Friedman. In this month’s part two installment, we’ll focus on some of the responses available and leadership required to manage future organizational behavior. Don’t fight these trends (outsourcing, off-shoring, supply-chaining, insourcing and info rming) by rejecting the obvious or denying the reality. Embrace the challenge!

Get Exposed!

By Jackie Rosselli

UNIVATOR Awards Can Help Position Your Company as a Leader. Awards matter. Just ask anyone who’s won one. Rightly or wrongly, awards send the message that you’re credible, an expert in your chosen profession. Beyond that, they offer the winner something more tangible -- exposure!Academy Award-winning films frequently receive a boost at the box office in the weeks following the ceremony, as do the actors who take home the coveted prize.

Similarly, the companies that were recipients of last year’s UNIVATOR Awards have all achieved positive results. Some advertised their success in sales and marketing brochures, an effective technique often used by smaller companies to underscore their reliability and to level the playing field when competing with larger, well-established firms.

Others reaped the benefits of media attention, giving them an always-needed -- and free -- source of exposure. For those who doubt that uniforms make good news stories, simply click on any one of the national or international news items available each month at UniformMarket. Or simply read this month’s feature on the Boston Hyatt Regency. Its supplier, Cintas, who sponsored the uniform makeover contest that lead to the Hyatt’s redesign, received a UNIVATOR award for its distinctive and original marketing strategy.

And you, too, can be an award winner. Entries are now being accepted for the second annual UNIVATOR Awards, a UniformMarket competition that showcases the best industry ideas and achievements of 2005. If you’ve launched a new and successful line, implemented marketing or sales strategies that have bolstered your company’s profits, creatively used technology to enhance your business or produced a public relations campaign with positive results, we want to hear from you!

Unlike other programs, the UNIVATOR awards honors you -- the manufacturers and distributors of uniforms, and your best products and ideas from 2005. It’s your chance to tell the world about your company’s greatest achievements for the year.

But hurry, time is running out! It doesn’t take much time to enter this year’s UNIVATOR award. Just send your ideas, pictures, press releases, product news, links, etc. to:
